I grew up on an arable and dairy farm near the Essex Cambridgeshire border; spending my free time wandering the woods, fields, footpaths; climbing haystacks, wading in ponds…. I remember creating cross stitch, and other craft, from a very early age with my mother and around the age of ten I began to paint watercolour and also received my first camera. The first photograph I ever took was of my father working in his vegetable garden. Painting and the outdoors were my love and I continued through my studies resulting in a BA Fine Art degree from the University of Kent in 1992. Settling into the ‘big’ city of Canterbury on arrival for my studies was exciting and I soon found some countryside, but I also discovered homelessness. I spent my three year course wholely distracted from my studies by my love for and subsequent voluntary work with those on the streets and/or with addictions. To pass my degree I focused my final show on this using photographs, (the days of film and dark rooms) drawing and artefacts. I married the summer before my final year and on graduating was soon expecting our first child. We went on to have five beautiful children and I embraced life as a busy full time mother. The occasional painting was completed up until the third was born and then time for such creativity expired. In need of a guaranteed income I went to work in our local primary school where I remained ,working wholeheartedly, until the summer of 2018. My children were leaving home; music and sport activity payments were declining and we were able to take a loss to our income. With my husband’s and parents’ encouragement I took the step and resigned. I enrolled at our adult education centre in Spanish and digital photography classes…how enjoyable study can be when one chooses it! During the year of 2019 I spent between one and three days a week documenting life on a local fruit farm with my camera, and will hopefully exhibit that work this autumn (2020). I enjoy many genres of photography: Street, Photojournalism, Documentary, Events, Nature, Landscape, Portrait….Mainly candid; capturing the moment or beauty.
